Fern Karsh is a lawyer and compliance professional with over a decade in law. She has a securities regulatory and general counsel background primarily in traditional and frontier asset management, including emerging technologies. She started her career at a large Bay Street firm. She subsequently served as General Counsel to investment fund manager, portfolio manager, exempt market dealers and a national scholarship plan dealer.
More recently she worked at a technology consultancy primarily focused on artificial intelligence, and as an independent consultant with a focus on digital securities. Fern is experienced with start-ups and she has counselled different businesses in digital securities, including money services businesses, cryptocurrency funds and advocacy not-for-profits, with a focus on compliant practices, governance, research and public policy. Fern has been a frequent public speaker at legal, compliance and industry conferences on law and regulation of digital securities.
Fern is involved in the community, including at start-up competitions, hackathons and serving on boards of directors. Fern sits on the Advisory Committees for the Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain Programs at George Brown College. Fern has a BA in economics and ACS (Finance) from the University of Western Ontario and a Juris Doctor from the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto.
