FAIR Canada supports the establishment of a national securities regulator on the basis that the current system of 13 provincial and territorial regulators has not delivered an adequate level of investor protection and holds out little hope for improvement in the future.
As we note in our newsletter, although we view the move to a single, national securities commission as a step in the right direction, the proposed federal legislation can nonetheless be improved. There is no certainty that the national commission will deliver on the promise of better investor protection, as this will largely depend on the final version of the legislation and the appointment of regulators firmly dedicated to improving investor protection. FAIR Canada has continued to call for the national commission to have a strong, clearly articulated investor protection mandate.
